The suprainian fossa is such a common trait among neandertalers (95%) that many haver regarded it as autopomorphic. However, it has been observed in lower frequencies in both earlier and later populations. This paper deals with the occurrence of suprainiian fossae in crania dating to the 6-7th centuries and 19-18th centuries from Ostrobotnia and Lapland. The incidence suprainian fossae in the Finnish samples is higher that in modern and medieval European crania published by Frayer. The relatively high incidence of this trait in Fennoscandia is tentatively attributed to the combination of a founder effect event at the end of the Ice Age and subsequent geographic isolation during the Holocene.
