  • Victorine Meurent is the face of some of Édouard Manet's best-known paintings. Although her work as an artist's model is well documented, her biography has proved hard to reconstruct. The discovery of a profile of her published in an American newspaper in 1869 reveals that she was a popular cancan dancer who performed in the United States as well as Paris, information that makes it possible to trace her career on the stage
