We studied the resistance of residents of a village on the southern borderof Portugal during the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries, to understandthe motivations for this resistance. To this end, we revisited contemporarypublications and bibliography on border communities, from which weanalyzed the life of the community, prior to the wars. We conclude that thisspecific resistance to attacks is based on latent resistance resulting from theborder characteristics of the territory

Estudamos a resistência dos moradores de uma aldeia na fronteira sul dePortugal durante as guerras dos séculos XVII e XVIII, para compreender asmotivações para essa resistência. Para tal, revisitámos as publicações coevase bibliografia sobre comunidades de fronteira, a partir das quais fizemosuma análise à vida da comunidade, prévia às guerras. Concluímos que estaresistência pontual, aos ataques, tem alicerces numa resistência latente frutodas características fronteiriças do território
