In this article we look, in general terms and applied to the Spanish case, into one of the basic concepts in Functional Grammar: syntactic transposition. Our inspection starts with a brief view on the origin of this term (Bally, Tesniére) and a review of the antecedents in the Spanish grammatical tradition, to go on with an enumeration and an exhaustive description of the requirements demanded by the transposing mechanism, and to end with an ilustration on the difeifferent types and varieties in Spanish.
