In July 2018 it was voted in the European Commission the proposal of Directive on Copyright for the Digital Single Market, which includes a couple of important new articles (11 and 13) which could affect directly the development of journalism, and of digital journalism more concretely: the so-called press publishers’ right, also popularly known (amongst the opposing group) as link tax, which proposes to give major newspaper and magazine groups with a new exclusive exploitation ancillary right, to charge Google News and other great digital platforms, for the reproduction of copyrighted contents; and an obligation for those platforms and content providers to care upon user-generated contents and remove them if considered that they are built on copyrighted material, a monitoring obligation. It will be examined which can be the possible incidence on the journalistic innovation and creativity, and the possible negative influence of such (difficult on the other hand) national implantation of the Directive.
