The succession of Trajan by Hadrian has been a debated topic among scholars in recent decades. If the doxa resultin? from literary sources, which present the elevation of Hadrian as due to Empress Plotina’s intervention, was long uncontested, the recent discovery of an aureus makes it now possible to relaunch this debate. The type RIC II.1, Hadrian, 1 (showing Trajan on the obverse as reigning emperor and on the reverse Hadrian accompanied by the legend Hadriano Traiano Caesari) indeed seems to indicate that Hadrian was for some time Trajan’s Caesar, a hypothesis that is still frequently rejected. This article aims, based on recent advances in numismatics but also in philology and on proso-pographic data, to suggest a dating of the minting of this series and to determine whether it is indeed proof of an inheritance settlement decided by Trajan himself in 117.
