    Portuguese guitars as we know them todaymodifications made to other instrumental types during the first decades of the 20th century. They are deeply connected with a music genre. What would guitars be like before the guitar? And which wore their musical context? Material evidence points to the existence, in the north of Portugal, of a wide variety of guitars, from guitarras inglesas, guitarrões, cithralias, cítaras campeiras, and, of course, Portuguese guitars. Each of them has dimensions, morphological characteristics, materials, number of strings, execution techniques and, above all, unique contexts of use. Throughout the article, it will be possible to reflect on the rise of the guitar as a national instrument, enumerate, describe and characterize the different instrumental typologies found and finally frame its manufacture in the context of European guitar playing, highlighting the most original aspects of the instruments built in the north of Portugal.

      As guitarras portuguesas tal como as conhecemos hoje em dia são o resultado de modificações operadas em outras tipologias instrumentais durante as primeiras décadas do século XX e encontram-se profundamente associadas a um género musical. Como seriam, então, as guitarras antes da guitarra? E quais os seus contextos de utilização? As evidências materiais apontam para a existência, no norte de Portugal, de uma grande variedade de guitarras, desde guitarras inglesas, guitarrões, cithralias, cítaras campeiras e, claro, guitarras portuguesas. Cada uma delas com dimensões, características morfológicas, materiais, número de cordas, técnicas de execução e sobretudo, contextos de utilização singulares. Ao longo do artigo será possível refletir sobre a ascensão da guitarra enquanto instrumento nacional, enumerar, descrever e caraterizar as diferentes tipologias instrumentais encontradas e finalmente enquadrar o seu fabrico no contexto da violaria europeia, destacando os aspetos mais originais dos instrumentos construídos no norte de Portugal.
