  • Resumen
    • This article delves into the multifaceted portrayal of the rue (ruta graveolens)  in literature of the Spanish Golden Age. Despite often being relegated to a mere footnote as a medicinal herb, the rue played a significant role beyond its medicinal properties. With its aromatic bitterness and widespread growth around the Mediterranean, the rue enjoyed popularity in ancient times and the early modern era. The article examines its appearances in literary works, revealing its symbolic associations, therapeutic applications, and societal perceptions. Through textual analysis spanning from Shakespearean dramas to Spanish picaresque novels, the article illuminates the rue's rich cultural significance. It underscores the importance of contextualizing references to everyday objects like ruda within their historical and cultural frameworks to glean deeper insights into past societies.
