  • Resumen
    • Competing versions of the ‘Schwabenspiegel’ emerge following the transliteration of the Low German ‘Sachsenspiegel’ into this Upper German law book. These varying texts are fashioned for integration into different spheres of social and political influence. While the earliest E Version, penned within Minorite circles in Regensburg, contains the urban formulation of ‘rehten fride’ as well as a prose chronicle dedicated to the Kings and Judges of the Old Testament (Book of Kings), different features are emphasized during the course of expanding sovereign interests, particularly in the long-form Z Version as well as in the Vulgata Version. The following paper examines the earliest textual witness tradition of the ‘Schwabenspiegel’ before 1300.
