Augmented Reality as a Tool for Heritage Education and Valuation of Historical Heritage

    El abandono de edificios históricos sigue siendo un problema frecuente en numerosas ciudades de todo el mundo. Este problema puede atribuirse a diversos factores, como los cambios en el sector económico, la escalada de los valores inmobiliarios, las inspecciones inadecuadas, la ausencia de incentivos fiscales y la insuficiencia de las reparaciones debido a normativas deficientes o inexistentes en el Plan General, entre otros retos. Ante estos retos, las tecnologías digitales han demostrado ser herramientas valiosas para documentar, conservar y restaurar edificios y artefactos culturales. La Realidad Aumentada (RA) es una de esas tecnologías que puede ser de gran ayuda en la educación sobre el patrimonio, con el objetivo de concienciar a la población sobre el patrimonio histórico de su entorno. Aprovechando la RA, se pueden realizar esfuerzos para preservar y aumentar el valor de estos edificios. Este estudio examina la aplicación de la tecnología de Realidad Aumentada en la representación del patrimonio histórico-cultural de Crissiumal/RS, centrándose en la educación patrimonial y la valorización de los bienes históricos de la ciudad. La ciudad alberga varios edificios históricos que, desgraciadamente, han caído en el olvido y han sufrido modificaciones a lo largo de los años. En este estudio nos centramos en el análisis de la primera estación de autobuses de la ciudad, construida en 1944. La metodología empleada abarcó cuatro etapas principales: investigar la historia del edificio, analizar las características arquitectónicas y las modificaciones aplicadas a su fachada, desarrollar un modelo 3D e implementar la Realidad Aumentada (RA) para aplicaciones prácticas. La utilización de la RA permitió a la comunidad vivir experiencias inmersivas y acceder a información histórica sobre edificios culturales. Las conclusiones del estudio indican que la tecnología de RA puede ser una herramienta valiosa en iniciativas dirigidas a la educación sobre el patrimonio dentro de la comunidad. Al generar un sentimiento de reconocimiento y pertenencia, la RA fomenta el aprecio y la conservación de los edificios históricos.

    The abandonment of historical buildings remains a prevalent issue in numerous cities worldwide. This problem can be attributed to various factors, such as shifts in the economic sector, escalating property values, inadequate inspections, the absence of tax incentives, and the insufficiency of repairs due to deficient or nonexistent regulations in the Master Plan, among other challenges. In light of these challenges, digital technologies have proven to be valuable tools for documenting, conserving, and restoring buildings and cultural artifacts. Augmented Reality (AR) is one such technology that can serve as a powerful aid in heritage education, with the objective of raising awareness among the population about the historical heritage within their environment. By leveraging AR, efforts can be made to preserve and enhance the value of these buildings. This study examines the application of Augmented Reality technology in representing the historical-cultural heritage of Crissiumal/RS, focusing on heritage education and the appreciation of the city’s historical assets. The city is home to several historical buildings that have unfortunately been forgotten and undergone modifications over the years. For this study, the focus was on analyzing the city’s first bus station, constructed in 1944. The methodology employed encompassed four main stages: investigating the building’s history, analyzing the architectural features and modifications applied to its facade, developing a 3D model, and implementing Augmented Reality (AR) for practical applications. Through the utilization of AR technology, immersive experiences were made possible for the community, granting them access to historical information about cultural buildings. The findings of the study indicate that AR technology can serve as a valuable tool in initiatives targeting heritage education within the community. By generating a sense of recognition and belonging, AR fosters an appreciation for and preservation of historical buildings.
