    La conmemoración del quinto centenario del descubrimiento del Estrecho de Magallanes es una ocasión para examinar la relación entre dicha zona y el resto del país. Aunque la región de Magallanes ha sido considerada desde muy temprano como parte integral de Chile como entidad política, los lazos entre el centro y el extremo sur del país han sido tenues y aun casi inexistentes durante la mayor parte de la historia y solo se han ido fortaleciendo durante el último siglo.
