David Cameron en el número 10 de Downing Street: escenarios prioritarios y retos inmediatos

    El pasado 6 de mayo de 2010, el Partido Conservador vencía en las elecciones británicas. Liderados por David Cameron, los tories recuperaban la escarapela de “partido natural de gobierno”, aunque esta vez se hacía necesario un gobierno de coalición con los liberales-demócratas de Nick Clegg. La llegada al número 10 de Downing Street no fue un camino fácil para el joven líder, como tampoco lo están siendo los retos que debe afrontar en el corto plazo.

    En la primera parte de este artículo examinamos las causas principales que llevaron a David Cameron primero a la jefatura de su partido y más tarde, a convertirse en Primer Ministro. En la segunda, analizaremos el modus operandi del Partido Conservador en su primer año de gobierno donde además de dar una respuesta a las dificultades económicas por las que atraviesa su país no hay que olvidar que el 5 de mayo hubo de afrontar el referendo para la modificación del sistema electoral, tal y como se había comprometido con sus socios de coalición. Asimismo, durante este primer curso político de gobierno, el Partido Conservador ha tenido un importante protagonismo en el escenario internacional con escenarios como Libia que presentan interrogantes en lo referido a su resolución final.

    The past May 6th 2010, the Conservative Party won the British elections. Led by David Cameron, the tories recovered the title of “natural party of government”, although this time, a coalition government with the liberal-democrats of Nick Clegg was necessary to form a government. The arrival to number 10 of Downing Street was not a easy way for the young leader, like the challenges that he must confront in the short term. In the first part of this article, we examine the main causes that led David Cameron, first to the direction of his party and, later to become Prime minister. In the second part, we will analyze the modus operandi of the Conservative Party in its first year of government where besides of facing the economic difficulties that affect the country, we mustn’t forget that on May 5th it had to confront the referendum on the modification of the electoral system, as it was dealt with the coalition partners. Also, during this first political term of government, the Conservative Party has had an important role in the international scene, like in the Libya crisis, that raise questions on the final resolution of the conflict.
