Using examples from some 16th century German and Spanish reports dealing with negotiations between indigenous peoples and Spanish conquerors in Latin America, the article describes transcultural forms of communication between these very different cultures. It can be stated that politeness certainly played a role in the initial decades of contact. However, as far as we can reconstruct from the texts, which have been reformed from a European perspective, it appears that politeness did not significantly contribute, especially not to a better understanding between the cultures.
