    Abstract Spiritism is a belief that presents itself as religión, philosophy and science. It was organized byAllan Kardec in France in the second half of the 19th century and it has its own perspective on mental illness. It considers that alienation is a consequence of undeveloped mediumship or obsession caused by ignorant, vengeful entities, carriers of evil "influences", that would live in a parallel world. This perspective was organized from reflections that circulated in countries that had adepts of the spiritist proposal in the passage to the 20th century. Based on the scientific premises of the time, these thoughts were close to a critique of the theories of approach to mental illness. Spiritists in Brazil organized institutions to care for the mentally ill influenced by this perspective. One of them is the Spiritist Hospital of Porto Alegre, founded in 1926 and supported by spiritist institutions in Rio Grande do Sul State. Based on the diversity of debates presented by this research group, this paper seeks to present the spiritist vision on mental illness and how it was instrumentalized to attend to the sick through the organization of this institution.

    Resumo O espiritismo, crença que se apresenta como religião, filosofia e ciência, organizada por Alian Kardec na França na segunda metade do século XIX, possui uma perspectiva própria da doença mental. Considera que a alienação é conseqüência de mediunidade não desenvolvida ou de obsessão causada por entidades ignorantes, vingativas, portadoras de "influenciações" maléficas, que viveriam em um mundo paralelo. Essa perspectiva organizou-se a partir de reflexões que circularam por países que tiveram adeptos da proposta espírita na passagem para o século XX, todos próximos de uma crítica às teorias de abordagem da doença mental, assentada sobre bases científicas da época. Baseados nessa perspectiva, os espíritas no Brasil organizaram instituições de atendimento a doentes mentais, como o Hospital Espírita de Porto Alegre, fundado em 1926, sustentado pelas instituições espíritas do Rio Grande do Sul. Este paper procura apresentar a visão espírita sobre doença mental e como ela foi instrumentalizada, para o atendimento aos doentes através da organização dessa instituição, partindo da diversidade de debates apresentado pelo grupo.
