Abstract The article analyzes the transatlantic circulation of knowledge and theories linked to the restoration of health through non-graduate actors of the art of healing who worked in the province of Santa Fe (Argentina), during the second half of the nineteenth century. To this end, it will study two specific cases. On the one hand, that of Lucas Fernández, a healer who in 1854 requested authorization to exercise his calling, despite not having a diploma. On the other, that of the spiritist Juan Pablo Quinteros, who filed a complaint against the president of the Provincial Council of Hygiene before the repeated fines that were applied to him. Through a hermeneutic and qualitative analysis of the content of their legal presentations, it is expected to reconstruct the horizon of ideas that both actors articulated in their discourses and that, possibly, guided their practices. The purpose of the article is to identify the global condition of nineteenth-century healing arts, especially those practiced by non-qualified actors, based on their social legitimacy and relevance within the field of healing.
