On 24 January 1939, Josep Maria Trias Peitx arrived at the port of Port-Vendres, in the south of France, aboard the Sirocco, a ship belonging to the French Embassy. Trias Peitx was one of approximately 440,000 refugees who left Spain during that winter.¹ He had been a member of Unió Democràtica de Catalunya (UDC) since 1931, when he had broken with the family’s political tradition of Carlism and its advocacy of a confessional state, and was the party’s secretary-general during the Spanish Civil War.
