    En su Erec y Enide Vázquez Montalbán utiliza el recurso de la reescritura de la primera homónima novela de la materia de Bretaña, para componer un cuadro desolado y crepuscular del mundo occidental a comienzos del siglo XXI. El hipotexto revive en las aventuras de los personajes: una señora de la alta burguesía barcelonesa, una joven pareja de voluntarios en Guatemala y un anciano catedrático especialista en materia artúrica. El discurso de despedida de la universidad de este último constituye el entramado teórico de la novela, desvelando su maracado carácter metaliterario.

    In his Erec y Enide, Vázquez Montalbán uses the technique of rewriting the first homonymous novel about the Matter of Britain, to paint a desolate and crepuscular picture of the Western world at the beginning of the 21st century. The hypotext is brought to life in the adventures of the characters: a lady from the bourgeoisie of Barcelona, a young volunteer couple in Guatemala and an elderly professor who is a specialist in the Arthurian Cycle. The latter’s farewell speech at the university constitutes the theoretical framework of the novel, thus revealing its marked metaliterary character.
