  • Resumen
    • Three Hittite words (nēpiš- ‘sky, heaven’, alpa- ‘cloud’ and kammara- ‘mist, fog, dimness, swarm’) are analyzed in their respective contexts to research what they are mostly associated with. The words are also examined in terms of their cognates (a proposal to associate Lyc. tabahaza and Hitt. nēpiš- is included as well). Lastly, etymologies postulated by various scholars are also discussed, and plausible semantic change routes are proposed along with required proto meanings for specific stages (nēpiš- is derived from PIE *nebh-, kammara- – from PIE *ḱem-, while alpa- is connected with Lat. albus). The combined contextual and semantic analysis is intended to explain the disparities between connotations across different Indo-European languages
