  • The present study deals with an alleged Egyptian loanword in ancient Greek. As Egyptian equivalent for Greek κάλαθος “basket” the Egyptian nouns qrḥt and krḥt were proposed, but for both suggestions there are some linguistic and semantic problems. Instead, the Greek noun is attested from the fifth century BC and is related to or derived from the Mycenaean ka-ra-to.
