The traditional interpretation of Lyd. qλdãn- as a theonym as been recently dispelled by Euler and Sasseville (2019), who state it is in fact the donor form of Gk Κροῖσος ‘Croesus’ (acc.sg. Κροῖσον). Such an assumption may shed some light on several passages of the Lydian corpus, mainly LW 23.1, where Qλdãns and Artemis (qλdãnl artimuλ⸗k) are generally thought to share the same syntactic level (viz. a beneficiary dative). This morphological analysis, rooted in flawed phonological views, will be reassessed in the present paper. The most important word of LW 23.2 is wintaṣ [c.], formerly read as wintaḍ [nt.] ‘temple’ (LW 226), now translated as ‘Bettlager’ (Euler/Sasseville 2019:132). The etymology of this word will be addressed as well. After a survey of the attestations of qλdãn- (§ 2), I will tentatively suggest a new etymological proposition for it (§ 3), including possibly related Anatolian forms (§ 4).
