El aspecto étnico de la nación ha sido un factor clave en la construcción del discurso nacionalista militar paraguayo, tanto desde la figura del mestizaje como del idioma guaraní. Este discurso en la práctica, sin embargo, entra en una aparente contradicción con los esfuerzos del estado paraguayo por “civilizar” y eliminar a las comunidades indígenas no integradas en el estado-nación. Al analizar el encuentro entre las fuerzas armadas y los indígenas chaqueños durante la Guerra del Chaco, se puede constatar que el discurso nacionalista militar, si bien contiene un elemento de referencia a lo guaraní, se convierte en excluyente frente a otras poblaciones indígenas, permitiendo el ejercicio de la violencia al “otro” indígena desde una posición de superioridad civilizadora.

The ethnic dimension of national identity has been a key factor in the construction of the Paraguayan military nationalist discourse, both through the figure of mestizaje and the Guaraní language. In practice, however, this discourse enters into an apparent contradiction with the efforts of the Paraguayan state to “civilize” and eliminate indigenous communities not integrated into the nation-state. In analyzing the encounter between the armed forces and the indigenous peoples of Chaco during the Chaco War, it can be seen that the military nationalist discourse, although it contains an element of reference to the Guaraní, becomes exclusionary with respect to other indigenous populations. This allowed the exercise of violence against the indigenous “other” from a position of civilizing superiority.
