Throughout the several re-editions of his works, Hume supressed eight of the essays he had already published. Our aim is to offer an inte.rpretative hypothesis of this supression from a comprehensive reading of Humean thought that reveals the coexistence of two standards of discourse in his writings. In this way, Hume's philosophical development becomes a real, strict matter of style: from the treatise form to the essay form and, moreover, to the dialogical one, surrendering the allegorical tone displayed precisely in the withdrawn essays.
