  El trastorno por déficit de atención/hiperactividad (TDAH) es una enfermedad neuropsiquiátrica con una prevalencia en adultos estimada entre  un 3-5%. Clínicamente , en esta población se observan  dificultades atencionales y la disfunción ejecutiva se manifiestan por la dificultad para organizarse, planificar tareas, establecer prioridades, estructurar el tiempo y terminar los proyectos o tareas asignadas, es por ello que el diagnóstico se basa en el análisis de estos comportamientos mediante el DSM IV-V. Dentro de las alternativas terapéuticas, el metilfenidato, es un medicamento psicoestimulante aprobado para el tratamiento del trastorno por déficit de atención, su uso es bastante controvertido, debido a la presencia de efectos adversos a largo plazo que desarrollan algunos pacientes, sin embargo , se ha evidenciado que en algunos otros puede tener un impacto positivo a tal punto que  sigue siendo la opción terapéutica de primera línea para el manejo de TDAH en el adulto. Por esta razón, en el presente artículo se reconocerá la importancia del metilfenidato como tratamiento del TDAH según las últimas actualizaciones.
