This work focuses on two specific aspects of the history of Alcañiz. On the one hand, on the origin of the Christian castle built in the 12th century on the Pui-Pinos hill, on the right bank of the Guadalope River, around which the current city was built following the abandonment of the Islamic settlement of Al-Qannis, located about four kilometers upstream on the left bank. On the other hand, on the evolution of the settlement of this sector of the Guadalope River throughout the first millennium of our era, when the main population centres were located around the area of la Redehuerta and Alcañiz el Viejo, on the left bank, in clear agreement with the irrigation infrastructure, the Acequia Vieja, whose origin can be traced back to Roman times.
