La primera presencia judía en Toledo parece constatarse en el siglo IV. Posteriormente, en época visigoda su número aumentaría, aunque tuvieron que padecer la política antijudía llevada a cabo por la monarquía en el siglo VII.
El establecimiento de los musulmanes en la ciudad a partir del año 711, y dada la tolerancia religiosa que practicaban hacia cristianos y judíos, supuso que el número de estos se incrementara. A partir del año 1085, con la conquista cristiana de la ciudad, aunque se les permitió seguir viviendo en esta, su situación habría de cambiar en sus relaciones con el nuevo poder. Durante los siglos XII y XIII no parece que hubo enfrentamientos graves entre cristianos y judíos. Entonces algunos judíos toledanos ocuparon cargos importantes en la corte y otros se dedicaron a la traducción de obras escritas en árabe. La grave crisis económica que tuvo lugar en el siglo XIV habría de repercutir, en ocasiones gravemente, en sus relaciones con el sector cristiano, especialmente por la actividad prestamista a la que algunos judíos se habían dedicado.

The first Jewish presence in Toledo seems to be found in the 4th century. Later, in the Visigothic period, the number would increase, although they had to suffer from the antiJewish policy carried out by the monarchy in the 7th century. The establishment of Muslims in the city from the year 711 meant that their number would increase -given the religious tolerance Muslims practiced towards Christians and Jews. From the year 1085, with the Christian conquest of the city, although they were allowed to continue living in it, their situation would change in their relations with the new power. During the 12th and 13th centuries it does not seem that there were any serious clashes between Christians and Jews. Then some Toledo Jews held important positions at court and others dedicated themselves to the translation of works written in Arabic. The serious economic crisis that took place in the fourteenth century would have repercussions, sometimes seriously, in their relations with the Christian sector, especially due to the lending services some Jews provided.
