    En el año 2023, en el que se celebró el 75 Aniversario de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos (DUDH), cupo preguntarse en qué punto nos hallamos. ¿Se desmoronan los fundamentos para la protección de los Derechos Humanos en el mundo? ¿Podemos decir que, desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, hemos avanzado en la extensión y en el desarrollo de los derechos humanos al mismo ritmo que se han desarrollado y han enriquecido nuestras sociedades? ¿De qué manera está cumpliendo la Unión Europea con su compromiso de situar los derechos humanos en el corazón de su Acción Exterior? ¿Siguen siendo las Naciones Unidas un buen instrumento para la defensa del orden multilateral?

    On the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we wonder whether its foundations are collapsing, whether we can still speak of universality and whether the values that the Declaration defends are still predominant on a global scale. We analyse why the international mechanisms that should protect human rights in the world do not work and the consequences of what we have called the politics of indifference in dealing with the suffering of millions of human beings.

    From the origins of the Universal Declaration to its consolidation, through the impressive role of some very relevant women leaders who managed to include women in the generic “all”, the article analyses the challenges facing 21st century societies in a fractured and complex global scenario.

    Finally, the article addresses the challenge for the European Union to remain the main driving force for the promotion and defense of human rights in the world.
