Criticism often mentions aesthetic disruptions which cross medieval romance writing: first defined by its spiritual vocation, its omnipresent symbolism and its transcendental dimension, it gradually became more literal and modern. This study deals with the evolution of the romance symbolism from the Middle Ages to Renaissance by proposing a diachronic analysis of three chivalrous adventures originally contained in Chrétien de Troyes’s Chevalier de la Charrette, which are «la lance enflammée», «le gué interdit» and «le Pont de l’Épée». We will examine the development of this initially symbolic episode, which is part of a Celtic supernatural and courtly love dimension, by observing the rewriting of the three aforementioned adventures, from Chrétien de Troyes until the printed Lancelot, including the first XIIIth century manuscripts of the Prose Lancelot.
