Resumen de Empowering first-generation learners: Exploring spanish culture, history, and politics via internet-integrated education in u.S. Universities

Marina Cuzovic Severn

  • This article details the use of technology and the internet to enhance the university course “Spanish History and Culture” taught in the U.S. Spanning 14 weeks, the course covers various aspects of Spanish culture and history, including the nationalism of three autonomous communities: Catalonia, Basque Country, and Galicia, which is the main focus of this article. The article outlines in-class activities employed during the elaboration of this topic, such as researching the communities online, engaging in discussions about nationalism, inviting guest speakers from Spain, and analyzing cultural aspects through activities centered on literature, music, and personal connections. Moreover, it describes the incorporation of weekly news presentations from Spain, emphasizing the use of reliable sources and digital platforms such as FlipGrid and Canvas Studio for student engagement. The course concludes with student presentations, stressing the importance of using credible academic sources and developing critical thinking skills. In future iterations, this course will incorporate ChatGPT into class activities to enhance students' cultural exploration and promote creativity. At the same time, it will illuminate the limitations of this digital tool, emphasizing that technology should enhance, not supplant, the depth and authenticity individuals contribute to the creative and scholarly process. This approach advances digital literacy and sharpens critical thinking abilities. The conclusion underscores the impact of technology on education, particularly for first-generation students, and underscores the importance of guiding students in navigating the digital world, differentiating between reliable and unreliable sources, and preparing them for the ever-evolving digital landscape.
