The aim of this paper is to analyse aspects of two texts by Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), called «The Tenth Muse», and one by Antônio Vieira (1608-1697), «The Emperor of Portuguese Language». In teh famous letter "Carta Atenagórica", Juana made a strong criticism of Vieira's "Sermon of Mandato" (1650). This letter was published in 1690 by the Bishop of Puebla, Manuel de Santa Cruz, under the pseudonym of Sor Filotea de la Cruz, along with criticism of her ideas and the daring position Juana took concerning Antônio Vieira. The criticism received a reply by her, "Respuesta a Sor Filotea", published posthumously in 1700 in Madrid. These famous texts were already analysed in many approaches. My aim here is to show how they are gook examples of rhetorical performance made not in traditional legal and political settings, but through sermon and letters, indicating also a kind of dialogue between two great intellectuals from the History of Rhetoric in the Lusophone and Hispanic world.
