    Two main north-south land routes, which ran from Tangier to Sala/Rabat on the coast on the one hand, and Volubilis in the interior on the other, are attested in Tingitane by the Antonine Itinerary, which provides a list of stations for the Roman province of Tingitane, along with the distances that separate them. But, apart from rare sections, these have not always been located on the ground with certainty because, unlike other regions of the Roman Empire, the roads of Tingitane were not paved or marked by milestones. Since the XIXth century, archaeological surveys carried out within the limits of the Roman province of Tingitane Mauritania have mapped a large number of sites (urban, rural, military...) from different phases of the ancient period (Mauritanian, Roman or post-Roman) which suggest a dense but ephemeral road network along the borders and inlands that complements the river and maritime network

    Deux principales voies terrestres de direction nord-sud, qui partaient de Tanger vers Sala/Rabat sur la côte d’une part, et Volubilis à l’intérieur d’autre part, sont attestées en Tingitane par l’Itinéraire Antonin qui fournit pour la province romaine de Tingitane une liste de stations avec les distances qui les séparent. Mais, hormis de rares tronçons, celles-ci n’ont pas toujours été localisées sur le terrain avec certitude car, contrairement à d’autres contrées de l’Empire romain, les voies de la Tingitane n’ont pas été pavées ni balisées par des milliaires.

    Depuis le XIXème siècle, les prospections archéologiques menées dans les limites de la province romaine de Maurétanie tingitane ont cartographié un grand nombre de sites (urbains, ruraux, militaires, etc.) de différentes phases de l’époque antique (maurétanienne, romaine ou post-romaine) qui laissent deviner un réseau viaire dense mais fugace le long des frontières et à l’intérieur des terres qui complète le réseau fluvial et maritime
