Por lo general, el actual proceso de urbanización mundial se rige por diferentes procesos de mercantilización espacial, que se están expandiendo hacia zonas antes denominadas rurales y naturales. El turismo, una actividad económica igualmente en crecimiento a escala mundial, es inseparable de modos distintos de consumir el espacio, siendo un importante motor de urbanización, especialmente en los lugares donde esta actividad ejerce una presión mayor.
Sin embargo, la naturaleza de estos procesos varía según las especificidades de cada lugar. La ultraperiférica Región Autónoma de las Azores – una de las más pobres de Portugal – se compone de nueve islas. El proceso de urbanización que experimentan actualmente estas islas está marcado por una expansión y densificación mayores de las ciudades de las islas más centrales, por un constante despoblamiento de las islas y de las zonas más periféricas y rurales, y por un gran crecimiento del turismo en la región.
Basado en el trabajo de campo, realizado entre 2018 y 2010, este artículo explora las particularidades del proceso de urbanización en curso en las Azores, prestando atención especial a la influencia del turismo en el anterior, y también a la ilusione y contradicciones generadas por la urbanización creciente de una región que, sobre todo, se ha promocionado como destino sostenible y de naturaleza.

Broadly speaking, the current process of world urbanization is driven by different processes of commodification of space, which have been expanding to areas that were once called rural and natural. Tourism, which is an economic activity equally growing on a global scale, is inseparable from different forms of consumption of space, being an important promotor of urbanisation, especially in places where this activity exerts greater pressure.
However, the nature of these processes varies according to the specificities of each location. The outermost Autonomous Region of the Azores – one of the poorest in Portugal – is formed by nine islands. The urbanisation process currently experienced in these islands is marked by a greater expansion and densification of the cities of the more central islands, by the constant depopulation of more peripheral and rural islands and areas, and by the great growth of tourism in the region.
Based on fieldwork, conducted between 2018 and 2020, this article explores the particularities of the ongoing urbanisation process in the Azores, paying special attention to the influence of tourism on it, as well as to the illusion and contradictions generated by the growing urbanisation of a region that has been promoted, above all, as a sustainable and nature destination.

De forma lata, o actual processo de urbanização mundial é regido por diferentes processos de mercantilização do espaço, que se vêm expandindo a áreas outrora ditas rurais e naturais. O turismo, uma atividade económica igualmente em crescimento à escala global, é indissociável de diferentes formas de consumo do espaço, sendo um importante motor de urbanização, sobretudo dos locais onde esta atividade exerce maior pressão. Todavia, a natureza destes processos varia consoante as especificidades de cada local. A ultraperiférica Região Autónoma dos Açores – uma das mais pobres de Portugal – é composta por nove ilha. O processo de urbanização actualmente sentido nestas ilhas é marcado por uma maior expansão e densificação das urbes das ilhas mais centrais, pelo constante despovoamento das ilhas e áreas mais periféricas e rurais, e pelo grande crescimento do turismo na região. Com base em trabalho de campo, desenvolvido entre 2018 e 2010, este artigo explora as particularidades do processo de urbanização em curso nos Açores, dando especial atenção à influência do turismo sobre o mesmo, bem como à ilusão e contradições geradas pela crescente urbanização de uma região que vem sendo promovida, sobretudo, como um destino sustentável e de natureza.
