Objetos votivos nos contextos ritualísticos da Grécia arcaica e clássica: limites interpretativos das estatuetas de terracota em santuários dedicados a Hera

    Among the various forms of insertion of the image in Archaic and Classical Greek social context, for a long time the presence of terracotta figurines was neglected, found mainly in ritualistic and funerary environments. In recent decades, however, it has been possible to notice a growing interest of archaeological studies in trying to understand the social role of these objects. This article brings some reflections on iconographic interpretations of terracotta figurines, especially those found in sanctuaries dedicated to the goddess Hera, considering those figures that appear, consistently, in different cult environments throughout the Greek Mediterranean in these periods. The implications of approaching recurring figures in different contexts will be discussed in order to propose a specific interpretation – for a ritualistic context or even for the figure of the figurine itself.

    Entre as várias formas de inserção da imagem no contexto social grego arcaico e clássico, durante muito tempo se negligenciou a presença das estatuetas de terracota, encontradas principalmente em ambientes ritualísticos e funerários. Nas últimas décadas, porém, pôde-se perceber um crescente interesse dos estudos arqueológicos em tentar compreender o papel social desses objetos. Este artigo traz algumas reflexões sobre as interpretações iconográficas das estatuetas, especialmente aquelas encontradas em santuários dedicados à deusa Hera, considerando aquelas figuras que aparecem, de forma consistente, em diversos ambientes de culto ao longo do Mediterrâneo grego nesses períodos. Serão discutidas as implicações de se abordar figuras recorrentes em contextos distintos de modo a propor uma interpretação específica – para um contexto ritualístico ou mesmo para a própria figuração da estatueta.
