In the 1470s Francesco del Cossa painted a Madonna and Child over an older devotional image, which had been frescoed directly onto Bologna's city wall in the early fourteenth century and was thought to have miraculous properties. The history and transformation of the 'Madonna del Baraccano' is analysed here afresh, using documentary and technical sources, to clarify issues of dating, attribution and meaning
