    Durante la Guerra Civil, el monasterio de Montserrat fue incautado por la Generalitat de Catalunya con el fin de protegerlo. Carlos Gerhard fue nombrado su conservador.En abril de 1938, el recinto se convirtió en un hospital militar del Ejército del Este. En la planta baja del edificio de Nostra Senyora se instaló una biblioteca con unos 300 volúmenes.El Gobierno de la República formó un cuerpo de maestros, llamado Milicias de la Cultura. En Catalunya, la Generalitat impulsó el Servei de Biblioteques del Front. Ambos servían libros en el frente y en los hospitales.Los libros conservados en Montserrat formaron parte de los fondos de las Milicias de la Cultura. Durante los años posteriores a la guerra, algunos de los libros procedentes del hospital militar se incorporaron a la biblioteca y otros se reservaron hasta que finalmente se han integrado en el catálogo de la Abadía de Montserrat.

    During the Civil War the monastery of Montserrat was confiscated by theGeneralitat de Catalunya in order to protect it. Carles Gerhard was appointed theconservative. In April 1938 the site became a military hospital of the Ejéricito delEste. A library with around 300 volumes was installed on the ground floor of the Nostra Senyora building. The Government of the Republic formed a body ofteachers, called Milicias de la Cultura. In Catalonia, the Generalitat promoted theServei de Biblioteques del Front. Both served books at the front and in hospitals.The books kept in Montserrat were part of the funds of the Milicias de la Cultura.During the years following the war, some of the books from the military hospitalwere added to the library and others were reserved until they were finallyintegrated into the catalog of the Abbey of Montserrat.
