    En la vida de cada persona, tanto a nivel humano como espiritual, hay elecciones que la determinan. Hay convicciones o intuiciones que se convierten en la motivación subyacente como guía del estilo de vida, las acciones y el comportamiento de una persona. Seguir a Jesús es la vocación común de todo cristiano. Este seguimiento encuentra su fundamento en la práctica de las virtudes teologales, Fe, Amor y Esperanza. Esta práctica, a su vez, se inspira y se fortalece en una motivación profunda y particular de cada persona. Hay quienes han elegido la sencillez como Santa Teresa del Niño Jesús, o el celo apostólico como San Francisco Javier, o el servicio a los más pobres por amor a Jesús como Santa Teresa de Calcuta... La pregunta que se nos plantea al hablar de la vida y la espiritualidad del Cardenal Nguyen Van Thuan es la siguiente: ¿cuál es la motivación específica, profunda y personal que anima toda la vida y el pensamiento del Cardenal? Esta pregunta es el objeto de este estudio.

    In the life of every person, choices are made that are decisive for the course it is to take, both at the simply human level at the spiritual level. There are convictions, or intuitions, that become fundamental motivations in terms of guilding the choice of a way of life, as well as guiding the person´s actions and behaviours throughout their life. Following Jesus is the common calling of every Christian. It is founded on the practice of the theological virtues, Faith, Love, Hope. Such practice, in its turn, is both born of, and reinforces, a profound and specific motivation in each one of the believers. The believer may choose simplicity, in the manner of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus; or to dedicate themselves to the apostolate with the fervour of a St. Francis Xavier, or else, to serve the poorest of the poor, for love of Jesus, on the example of St. Theresa of Calcutta... The question put to us when speaking of the life and spirituality of Cardina Nguyen Van Thuan is this: What was the specific deep, personal, motivation that animated the Cardinal´s entire life and thought? This indeed is the subject of this study.
