Resumen de "Poco" y la denotación de los adjetivos graduables

Alberto Morón Pastor

  • Starting with the study of the Spanish word "poco", it is proposed that gradable adjectives project a Quantitative Phrase (QP) that introduces scalar information: the dimension (or gradable property) denoted by the adjective is applied to the subject of predication in a certain intensity or quantity that corresponds to an orientation of a scale. The interpretation by default in Spanish is provided by a phonetically empty element that orientates the scale upwards, that is to say, from the standard value to the highest degree in the scale. This phonetically empty element is equivalent to the quantitative term "much" that is found in old Spanish. The marked option takes place by means of the quantitative term "poco" and consists of orienting the scale downwards, in ither words, below the standard value of the scale. Once the scale has been oriented at the QP level, a degree operator located in an upper Degree Phrase 0-binds the adjective degree argument.
