Frequency vs. Time Representation of a Signal with a Smartphone and a Slide Whistle

    • Here, frequency vs. time representation of a “chirp” signal is studied with a smartphone and a slide whistle. First, I briefly introduce chirp signals with two recorded examples played with the slide whistle. The study is then extended with the introduction of bird vocalization patterns and how to reproduce them with the whistle. One example of a very common European bird vocalization heard in gardens is considered: that of a blue tit. The reproduction of this bird vocalization with the slide whistle shows a good agreement between the bird pattern and the whistle pattern.
