Este trabajo ofrece un bosquejo del régimen jurídico concerniente al matrimonio en los Estados Unidos. Explica las fuentes del derecho familiar y algunos antecedentes históricos del derecho sobre el matrimonio. Esboza las leyes básicas sobre la regulación del matrimonio, incluso las consideraciones constitucionales, el matrimonio civil, el matrimonio informal del common law, el matrimonio religioso, el matrimonio del mismo sexo y el matrimonio indígena. Finalmente, ofrece una reflexión sobre el matrimonio como institución y la importancia de evaluar las políticas públicas acerca del matrimonio y la familia con debida consideración de su papel primordial en la sociedad.

This article offers an outline of the laws concerning marriage in the United States. It explains the sources of family law and a few historical antecedents about marriage law. It outlines the basic laws concerning the regulation of marriage, including constitutional considerations, civil marriage, common law marriage, religious marriage, same-sex marriage and indigenous marriage. Finally, it offers a concluding reflection about marriage as an institution and the importance of evaluating policies on marriage and family with due consideration of their primordial role in society
