The presence of chelonian remains in the Middle Palaeolithic site of Cova Negra (Xàtiva, Valencia) is known since 1977, due to the faunal study publication by Pérez Ripoll on the material recovered in the 1950’s interventions. Among the obtained results, the presence of more than three hundred remains attributable to Testudo sp. were hitherto notified. In this work the chelonian material studied by Pérez Ripoll is assessed, as well as a set of uncontextualized remains recovered in 2013, both collections deposited in the Museu de Prehistòria de València.
This review has allowed the identification of the Hermann’s tortoise (Chersine hermanni) and the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis).
