  • Resumen
    • Closure of the Tethys Ocean during the Neogene brought the Alborán Domain allochthonous terrane to collide with the paleomargins of both NW Africa and S Iberia. During the collision, parts of the South Iberian Domain were deformed by a thin-skinned thrust-and-fold system, while another part (Nevado-Filábride Complex) was subducted below the Alborán Domain and accreted below it after undergoing Alpine HP-LT metamorphism and ductile deformations. The Flysch Trough units are composed of deep marine sediments that were deformed by thin-skinned thrust-and-fold systems and thrust over the South Iberian Domain. Below the sea level, the Betic-Rif orogenic system extends westwards into the Gulf of Cádiz area where several orogenic wedges are thrust over the oceanic crust of both the African and the European plates.
