Unchanged and hitherto unpublished text of a speech held at Tor Vergata University during a Colloquio fra giuristi a cento anni dalla nascita (Dialogue between jurists on the 100th anniversary of his birth) that was conceived and coordinated by Severino Caprioli, on May 8, 2004. Francesco Calasso (1904-1965), a teacher of the history of law at, among others, the universities of Florence and Rome, was then recalled by scholars of various backgrounds invited to “compare the different images that each of them holds of that rare master”. One of them, the oldest of all his students, was amiably reminded of certain phrases that had escaped him almost forty years earlier when writing about the common master he said: “The day will come when it will be possible, without scandal from the guild of critics, to make Calasso’s stylistic choices as a writer of history the object of study and perhaps even of minute analysis”.
