    Aquest treball fa una comparació entre les variants del castellà peninsular i mexicana pel que fa al’ús de l’eufemisme, el disfemisme, el tractament de vostè, el tuteig i el diminutiu com a mecanismesauxiliars en l’atenuació d’un missatge referent al que es considera com a tema tabú. La comparació del fenomen entre Espanya i Mèxic és especialment interessant a causa del complex passat històric quecomparteixen totes dues cultures. Mitjançant un qüestionari, s’ha fet un estudi quantitatiu basat en unamostra composta per 160 respostes. La investigació dona suport a les seves conclusions en els resultatsde l’anàlisi empírica de les dades obtingudes a partir d’una enquesta que va ser feta a parlants de lesdues varietats de l’espanyol considerades en aquest estudi. S’ha conclòs que, encara que hi hadiferències significatives en l’ús que les dues varietats donen als mecanismes esmentats, la similitud i lapresència dels tabús culturals que en regeixen l'ús continua sent molt important.

    The aim of this paper is to compare the use of euphemism, dysphemism, usteo, tuteo anddiminutivo as auxiliary mechanisms in the attenuation of a message referring to what is considered ataboo subject in Spanish and Mexican Spanish. The case of the comparison of the phenomenon betweenSpain and Mexico is particularly interesting due to the complex historical past shared by the twocultures. Using the questionnaire tool, a quantitative study was carried out based on a sample of 160responses. The research supports its conclusions with the results of the empirical analysis of the dataobtained from a survey that was launched among speakers of both variants of Spanish considered in thestudy. It has been concluded that, although there are significant differences in the use that both variantsgive to the previously mentioned mechanisms, the similarity and presence of the cultural taboos thatgovern their use is still very important.
