The aim of this essay is to explore some of the main elements present in the work of Judith Butler, more precisely in the book entitled Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990), originally published in the United States and translated into Portuguese in 2003 by Editora Civilização Brasileira, 13 years after its original publication. This work earned her great international notoriety by challenging traditional conceptions of gender, building a critique of the conception of the female subject constructed by feminist discourse and laying the foundations for thinking about politics and representation in relation to the presence of power structures that legitimize and perpetuate inequalities.

O objetivo deste ensaio é explorar alguns dos principais elementos presentes na obra de Judith Butler, mais precisamente no livro intitulado Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990), originalmente publicado nos Estados Unidos e traduzido para o português em 2003 pela Editora Civilização Brasileira, 13 anos depois de sua publicação original. Esta obra lhe garantiu grande notoriedade internacional ao desafiar as concepções tradicionais de gênero, mediante a construção de uma crítica sobre a concepção de sujeito feminino construída pelo discurso feminista e lança bases para pensar sobre política e representatividade no que se refere a presença de estruturas de poder que legitimam e perpetuam desigualdades.
