Resumen de El establecimiento de la congregación de las esclavas en el Puerto de Santa María (1915-1928)

Cuando se cumple un siglo de la presencia de las Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en El Puerto de Santa María, recordamos este aniversario presentando documentación inédita sobre la transformación del antiguo hospital de San Juan de Dios en el actual colegio Ntra. Sra. de Lourdes de la ciudad y los orígenes de esta congregación religiosa y pedagógica. Después de recordar aspectos históricos y artísticos del edificio el estudio se centra en las primeras décadas del siglo XX y la consolidación del inmueble en convento y colegio. Se analizan las obras previas a la llegada de las esclavas (1917-1923), el mecenazgo de la familia Osborne Guezala en su reconstrucción, la reforma de las fachadas y su arquitecto, la inauguración de la iglesia reformada y los inicios del nuevo carácter docente en el edificio. El estudio se completa con una cronología básica, anexo documental y referencias bibliográficas.

One century after the presence of the Handmaids of the Sacred heart of Jesus (ACI) in El Puerto de Santa Maria, we remember this anniversary presenting unpublished documentation on the transformation of the former hospital of San Juan de Dios into the current school Our Lady of Lourdes of the city and the origins of this religious and pedagogical congregation. After recalling historical and artistic aspects of the building, the study focuses on the first decades of the 20th century and the consolidation of the building into a convent and school. The works executed before the arrival of the Handmaids (1917-1923), the patronage of the Osborne Guezala family in its reconstruction, the renovation of the facades and their architect, the inauguration of the renovated church and the beginnings of the new educational character of the building are analysed. The study is completed with a basic chronology, a documentary annex and bibliographical references.
