    La guerra en Ucrania ha provocado una aceleración en la inversión del gasto militar sin precedentes y el rearme de todos los miembros de la comunidad internacional. Sin embargo, en un entorno cada vez más inestable y conflictivo en el que los principales actores del orden global son siempre los mismos, en la Unión Europea se ha puesto de manifiesto la necesidad urgente de alcanzar una autonomía estratégica y defensiva que permita al bloque occidental la toma de sus propias decisiones en materia de seguridad.

    En este documento, se analiza sucintamente el incremento global del gasto militar, la importancia del poder militar como factor de potencia y el retorno del armamento nuclear como tres aspectos que reflejan la transformación de un mundo en el que, para garantizar la paz, se necesita cada vez más una poderosa capacidad de defensa. Ante estos hechos, se realiza también un planteamiento sobre Europa y los esfuerzos realizados en la senda por una integración de la defensa común.

    The war in Ukraine has triggered an unprecedented acceleration in the investment of military spending and the rearmament of all members of the international community.

    However, in an increasingly unstable and conflictual environment in which the main actors in the global order are always the same, in the European Union, there is an urgent need to achieve strategic and defensive autonomy that allows the Western bloc to make its own security decisions.

    This paper briefly analyses the global increase in military spending, the importance of military power as a factor of power and the return of nuclear armaments as three aspects that reflect the transformation of a world in which a powerful defence capability is increasingly needed to guarantee peace. Against this backdrop, it also looks at Europe and the efforts made on the path towards common defence integration.
