    Con más de cuatro millones de refugiados, de los que más de tres millones son sirios que han huido de la guerra de Siria en 2011 y que son titulares del estatuto de «extranjeros bajo protección temporal», Turquía se ha convertido en el país que más refugiados ha acogido del mundo.

    Inicialmente recibidos con los brazos abiertos, con el transcurso de los años y el aumento de su presencia en el país, los sirios comenzaron a ser considerados como invitados indeseados, culpándolos de muchos de los problemas económicos, sociales o de seguridad que Turquía está atravesando. Además de las grandes carencias que se han evidenciado en el proceso de integración de los sirios en Turquía, durante estos años se ha constatado cómo la presencia y gestión de dicha comunidad están afectando a las políticas exterior e interior turcas, adaptadas en gran medida a la percepción que la sociedad ha ido teniendo sobre ellos, cuyas perspectivas de regreso son muy escasas en el futuro cercano.

    De no mejorarse su inclusión en Turquía y la cohesión social entre las comunidades siria y turca, no sería de extrañar que los problemas en la estabilidad interna y seguridad (nacional y humana) de Turquía persistan o se intensifiquen.

    With over four million refugees, of which more than three million are Syrians who started fleeing the war in their country in 2011 and who hold the “foreigners under temporary protection” status, Türkiye is the country that hosts the largest refugee population in the world.

    Despite being initially welcomed with open arms, as the years passed and they increased in number, they started to be seen as unwanted guests and were being blamed for causing many of the economic, social and security problems happening in Türkiye. In addition to the deficiencies in the integration process of Syrian refugees in the country, it has become clear that the presence and management of said community have affected both Turkish foreign and domestic policies. They have been greatly adapted to the social perceptions on the Syrian community, which currently has few hopes of returning to their home country anytime soon.

    The improvement of their inclusion in Türkiye and of the social cohesion between Syrian refugees and the locals is crucial to avoid the persistence or worsening of the internal stability and (national and human) security problems in Türkiye.
