This paper tries to reveal the characteristics of the movement called Theatre of Roots, its importance in the Indian culture and its common features with Peter Brook’s movie The Mahabharata. Both, the movement and the movie stress the importance of rediscovering Indian culture, but this time in a new environment, one which is characterized by diversity/hybridity. It is important to understand that neither the movement nor the movie wants to promote an 'Indianization’ of different people who live in India, but to emphasize the importance of different cultures (Eastern and Western) that come together on a common territory. The movement of roots and the movie based on the largest epic poem ever written retain an important ‘core’ and draw their inspiration from Hindu mythology.
