    Ka’á para los guaraníes, Ilex theaezans para Alexander von Humboldt, Ilex paraguariensis para A. Saint-Hilaire, Ilex paraguayensis para Carlos Thays, simplemente yerba para todos nosotros latinoamericanos. Este producto, madre de la tradición matera de la región, ha desarrollado una industria que hoy es símbolo económico regional, además de haber sido reconocido como Patrimonio Cultural del MERCOSUR y Patrimonio Inmaterial de la UNESCO. Con casi 400 años de historia, y muchos mitos y verdades sobre su devenir, presento en este texto los hitos fundamentales de sus sucesivos sistemas de producción y su actualidad y futuro como recurso cultural integral.

    Ka'á for the Guarani, Ilex theaezans for Alexander von Humboldt, Ilex paraguariensis for A. Saint-Hilaire, Ilex paraguayensis for Carlos Thays, simply yerba for all of us Latin Americans. This product, mother of the region's “mate round” tradition, has developed an industry that today is a regional economic symbol, in addition to having been recognized as MERCOSUR Cultural Heritage and UNESCO Intangible Heritage. With almost 400 years of history, and many myths and truths about its development, I present in this text the fundamental milestones of its successive production systems and its present and future as an integral cultural resource.
