    This article presents reflections on the use of the "modern" concept in Latin America, which is commonly associated with the spatial and temporal evolution of Western Europe and North America. Because of this widespread understanding of evolutionary idealized modernity, modernity is often considered to be outside the region or, if within Latin America, at some pont in the future. The consequence of this is that the concept of modernity tends to be useful in describing and prescribing a possible future of Latin America, not its present. The objective of this article is to problematizethe term modernity, associated with the evolutionary paradigm and to highlight the alternative contributions of the Latin American debate, whose contribution brings new and thought-provoking discoveries. At the end, it brings the suggestion of using typesof ideas of modernity in Latin America, aiming to transgress the idea of singularity and uniformities.

    Esse artigo tece reflexões sobre o uso do conceito "moderno" na América Latina, que comumente está associado à evolução espacial e temporal da Europa Ocidental e América do Norte. Em virtude disso essa interpretação envolve uma concepção idealizada e evolucionista da modernidade, que se encontra fora da região ou, se dentro da América Latina, em algum momento no futuro. A consequência disso é que o conceito de modernidade tende a ser útil na descrição e prescrição de um possível futuro da América Latina, não o seu presente. O objetivo desse artigo é problematizar o conceito de modernidade, importado e associado ao paradigma evolucionista, destacando as perspectivas críticas e alternativas do debate latino-americano, cuja contribuição traz novas e instigantes descobertas. Ao final traz a sugestão de utilizar tipos ideais de modernidade na América Latina, visando transgredir a ideia de singularidade e de uniformidades.
