    It is an essay of reflection on the epistemological debate of Physical Education in Brazil, in which we seek to elucidate some of the main questions that surround such discussion. Our study is bibliographical, for making use of materials already analyzed in the scientific field of Physical Education. Our main objective is the investigation and presentation of the main elements of the epistemological field of Physical Education. We seek to understand the epistemological debate of Physical Education in three dimensions, being they the attempts to make Physical Education a science, the problematic of the epistemological identity of the area, and the aspect referring to the theoretical matrices used for the production of knowledge in the field. Finally, we point out that the perspective of body culture as an advanced way, but not unique to think about the epistemological, pedagogical and political identity of Physical Education.

    Trata-se de um ensaio de reflexão sobre o debate epistemológico da Educação Física no Brasil, em que buscamos elucidar algumas das principais questões que rondam tal discussão. Nosso estudo é bibliográfico, por fazer uso de materiais já analisados no campo científico da Educação Física. Nosso objetivo principal perpassa pela investigação e apresentação dos principais elementos do campo epistemológico da Educação Física. Buscamos compreender o debate epistemológico da Educação Física em três dimensões, sendo elas: as tentativas de tornar a Educação Física uma ciência; a problemática da identidade epistemológica da área, e; o aspecto referente às matrizes teóricas utilizadas para a produção do conhecimento no campo. Por fim, sinalizamos que a perspectiva da cultura corporal como via avançada, mas não única para pensarmos a identidade epistemológica, pedagógica e política da Educação Física.
